Clarence L. Lyons, a 44-year-old Newport News man with a criminal rap sheet stretching back decades, was sentenced to 18 years in federal prison today for dealing cocaine, heroin, and crack while armed — a dangerous combo that ended with a loaded gun in his hand and narcotics in his pockets.
The sentence, handed down by Senior U.S. District Judge Robert G. Doumar, caps a 2017 case in which Lyons, already a 12-time convicted felon, was caught red-handed leaving a hotel room on February 24 carrying a loaded firearm, marijuana, cocaine, cocaine base, and heroin. Surveillance had been tracking him for weeks after law enforcement received intel that he routinely carried a weapon during drug deals.
Court documents reveal Lyons distributed cocaine, crack, and heroin across Newport News during the early weeks of 2017. That pattern of behavior led investigators from the Drug Enforcement Administration’s Washington Field Division and Newport News Police to close in. When they raided his hotel room following the arrest, they found drug paraphernalia — including a syringe and a marijuana smoking device — cementing the case against him.
“This defendant had no business anywhere near a firearm, let alone trafficking drugs with one in his hand,” said Tracy Doherty-McCormick, Acting U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia. “His criminal history is a roadmap of violence and repeat offenses. Today’s sentence protects the public from a proven danger.”
The prosecution, led by Assistant U.S. Attorney Megan M. Cowles, emphasized Lyons’ status as a prohibited person due to his prior felony convictions. Despite this, he remained active in the underground drug trade, putting communities at risk and flaunting federal firearms laws designed to keep guns out of the hands of violent offenders.
Karl C. Colder, Special Agent in Charge of DEA’s Washington Field Division, and Michael C. Grinstead, Acting Chief of Newport News Police, joined in announcing the sentencing. Court records, including Case No. 4:17-cr-87, are available through the Eastern District of Virginia’s U.S. Attorney’s Office, District Court website, or via PACER.
