Anthony Fernandez Medrano, Gun Running, Virginia 2015

ALEXANDRIA, Va. – In a stunning revelation of dual criminality, Anthony Fernandez Medrano, 28, from Arlington, Virginia, has pleaded guilty to willfully receiving a firearm while under indictment for cocaine possession. The charges against Medrano have underscored the perilous intersection of drug trafficking and gunrunning.

According to court records, in 2015, Medrano was indicted in a Virginia state court for possession of cocaine, a schedule II controlled substance. Despite his indictment, he managed to evade legal restrictions and purchase firearms from a private party seller. He even signed bills of sale confirming the illegal transactions.

The sentencing for this federal crime is set for August 11, where Medrano faces a maximum penalty of five years in prison. However, actual sentences are typically less stringent, as determined by the federal district court judge after considering various guidelines and factors.

Dana J. Boente, U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, and Michael B. Boxler, Special Agent in Charge of the ATF’s Washington Field Division, jointly announced the plea agreement following its acceptance by Senior U.S. District Judge Claude M. Hilton. Assistant U.S. Attorney Nathaniel Smith III is the lead prosecutor in this case.

A copy of the press release can be found on the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Virginia’s website, while related court documents and information are available on the District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia or on PACER by searching Case No. 1:17-cr-70.
