Bobby Tucker, Bribery, District of Columbia 2020

A former high-ranking official in the District of Columbia’s Office of Tax and Revenue (OTR) has been sentenced to 14 months in prison for accepting bribes to help a business client evade taxes.

Bobby Tucker, 63, former Chief of Collections for the OTR, was sentenced to 14 months of incarceration by Chief Judge Beryl Howell on December 3, 2020, as part of his plea agreement for bribery.

Tucker, of Suffolk, Virginia, was convicted of paying bribes to an OTR official in order to reduce tax liabilities for a business he consulted and to take other actions to benefit his business interests. The bribery scheme involved Tucker paying $5,000 in bribes to the OTR official in exchange for wiping out nearly $150,000 in tax liability for a business organization operating in the District of Columbia.

According to court documents, Tucker agreed to pay the OTR official, who was working as a confidential source, to obtain referrals of city taxpayers with outstanding tax liabilities. The bribery scheme was uncovered through an investigation led by the FBI’s Washington Field Office and the Office of the Inspector General for the District of Columbia.

Tucker’s sentence also included two years of supervised release, a $10,000 fine, and a special assessment of $100.

Acting U.S. Attorney Michael R. Sherwin, Special Agent in Charge James A. Dawson, and Inspector General Daniel W. Lucas commended the work of those who investigated the case and acknowledged the efforts of those who worked on the case from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia.

Tucker’s case highlights the importance of rooting out corruption in government and ensuring that those who engage in such activities are held accountable.
