Bobby Willis, 45, of Kirtland, N.M., is headed to federal prison for 24 months after pleading guilty to a $1,000,000.00 wire fraud scheme that preyed on two investors looking to break into the real estate market. The sentence, handed down in Albuquerque federal court, includes three years of supervised release and a pending restitution hearing to compensate his victims.
From March 2010 to August 2011, Willis orchestrated a calculated deception, convincing the victims to hand over $1,000,000.00 for a five-percent stake in a real estate investment company he claimed was already backed by millions from other investors. There was no such backing. Willis admitted the entire operation was a front—a hollow shell designed to siphon money directly into his and his wife’s personal accounts.
On October 25, 2010, Willis triggered a wire transfer of $900,000.00 from the supposed investment company’s account into his own. Then, on November 12, 2010, he moved another $95,000.00 the same way. These two transactions, detailed in a two-count indictment filed October 20, 2015, formed the core of the federal wire fraud charges that would eventually bring him down.
Willis pleaded guilty on July 12, 2017, admitting he had never invested a dime of the victims’ money. Instead, he and his wife spent it freely while feeding lies to keep the victims pacified. When questions arose about returns, Willis deployed associates to falsely assure the victims their investment was growing in value—fictions spun to prolong the fraud.
The FBI’s Albuquerque office led the investigation, unraveling Willis’s network of deceit and financial manipulation. Federal prosecutors, led by Assistant U.S. Attorney C. Paige Messec, built a case that left Willis with no viable defense, forcing the eventual guilty plea on both counts of the indictment.
Now, with his prison term locked in, the court will schedule a restitution hearing to determine exactly how much Willis must repay—though given the trail of financial wreckage, full recovery for the victims remains unlikely. The case stands as a stark reminder: in the world of high-stakes real estate, the biggest con isn’t always overproperty—it’s over trust.
