El Paso’s Alejandro Carrillo, 38, has been handed a 46-month prison term after being convicted of methamphetamine trafficking in New Mexico. The sentence was imposed by a federal court in Las Cruces.
Carrillo’s downfall began on April 23, 2014, when U.S. Border Patrol agents uncovered bundles of crystal meth concealed in his tractor-trailer during a routine traffic stop on Interstate 25 near Doña Ana County. Indicted on July 16, 2014, Carrillo faced charges for possession of methamphetamine with intent to distribute.
On September 18, 2014, Carrillo entered a guilty plea and confessed to transporting approximately 4.28 kilograms of meth from El Paso to Denver, Colorado, in exchange for $4,000. The investigation was a collaborative effort by the Las Cruces Homeland Security Investigations, the U.S. Border Patrol, and the New Mexico Department of Public Safety.
Prosecuting the case was Assistant U.S. Attorney Edwin Garreth Winstead, who brought justice to the streets of New Mexico with this hard-fought conviction.
