Hattiesburg, Miss. – A guilty plea has been entered by Michael Bounds, 30, a known felon, for illegal possession of a firearm, according to U.S. Attorney Mike Hurst and Special Agent Kurt Thielhorn of the ATF.
Bounds was apprehended on August 24, 2019, during a traffic stop in Forrest County, where authorities discovered two firearms, including a 12-gauge shotgun. Bounds had previously been convicted of multiple felonies.
The defendant was indicted for this offense on January 29, 2020, and is scheduled to be sentenced on December 8, 2020, at 9:45 a.m., before Senior U.S. District Court Judge Keith Starrett.
This investigation was a collaborative effort between the Hattiesburg Police Department and the ATF. Assistant United States Attorney Andrew W. Eichner is handling the prosecution of this case.
The Bounds conviction is part of Project EJECT, an initiative by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Mississippi under the U.S. Department of Justice’s Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) and Project Guardian. The project aims to reduce violent crime through comprehensive approaches involving prosecution, prevention, re-entry, and awareness.
Project EJECT stands for ‘Empower Justice Expel Crime Together’ and is a vital component in the broader effort to make neighborhoods safer by reducing gun violence and enhancing information-sharing among law enforcement agencies.
