HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — In a stunning turn of events in the battle against drug trafficking, John Ladelle Puryear, 49, has pleaded guilty to federal charges of possession with intent to distribute large quantities of cocaine, fentanyl, and crack.
Puryear’s arrest was a result of an intensive investigation by the Huntington Violent Crime and Drug Task Force, which led to the execution of a search warrant at his apartment. On January 16, 2025, law enforcement officers seized a chilling arsenal: approximately 299 grams of cocaine, 10 grams of fentanyl, and 8 grams of crack, as well as three firearms including a Smith & Wesson M&P Shield 9mm pistol, a Colt MK IV Series 80 .45-caliber pistol, and a Ruger LCF .380-caliber pistol. Additionally, officers found digital scales and over $6,487 in cash.
In court, Puryear admitted to possessing the seized controlled substances and firearms, which he claimed were for the protection of his drug stash and proceeds from its distribution. This brazen admission comes with severe consequences as Puryear faces a maximum penalty of 20 years in federal prison, at least three years of supervised release, and a fine that could reach $1 million.
The case has been presided over by United States District Judge Robert C. Chambers, and Assistant United States Attorney Stephanie Taylor is handling the prosecution. Acting United States Attorney Lisa G. Johnston made the announcement, commending the efforts of the law enforcement agencies involved in this investigation.
Puryear’s sentencing is scheduled for January 12, 2026, when he will face the full weight of the justice system’s wrath. Related court documents and information can be found on PACER by searching for Case No. 3:25-cr-125.
