New Orleans, Louisiana – In a gritty display of law enforcement’s commitment to reducing violent crime, Jerome Wilson, 29, from Bogalusa, has been sentenced to 144 months in federal prison for his role in drug trafficking and firearm violations. The sentence, handed down on June 11, 2024, also includes five years of supervised release and a $400 special assessment fee.
Wilson faced four counts of the indictment, including conspiracy to distribute fentanyl, conspiring to possess firearms for drug trafficking, possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug crime, and being a felon in possession of a firearm. The charges stemmed from surveillance operations by ATF agents on December 6, 2022, where they witnessed Wilson engaging in illegal narcotics transactions with firearms present.
The agents observed Wilson and his co-defendants conducting the illicit activities on Frenchmen Street. During the encounter, Wilson removed a firearm from the vehicle and placed it on the tire for easy access during drug sales. Following a brief pursuit, Wilson was apprehended. A subsequent search of his vehicle uncovered a Sarsilmaz Model Sar9, 9-millimeter pistol, stored in the center console. A criminal history check revealed that Wilson had prior felony convictions, making him ineligible to possess firearms.
This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), an initiative aimed at curbing violent crime and gun violence. The program, launched on May 26, 2021, focuses on fostering community trust, supporting organizations preventing violence, strategic enforcement, and measuring outcomes. The Department of Justice has been strengthening PSN strategies to ensure safer neighborhoods.
The investigation into Wilson’s crimes was a collaborative effort by the ATF, DEA, and New Orleans Police Department. Assistant United States Attorney Maurice E. Landrieu, Jr., of the Narcotics Unit, and Assistant United States Attorney Michael Trummel, of the Violent Crime Unit, prosecuted the case.
