Gary Stanley Williams, a 49-year-old Boise man, was caught in an undercover sting after a citizen reported his suspicious online activity. Williams was found to be interacting with several online accounts that appeared to be operated by minor females. An undercover detective with the Boise Police Department posed as a 14-year-old female and engaged in sexually explicit conversations with Williams, who expressed interest in child sex abuse material.
Following the conversations, the Boise Police Department obtained a federal search warrant to seize and search Williams’ electronic devices. A forensic examination of his cellphone revealed numerous files of child sex abuse material, including depictions of prepubescent children and toddlers.
Williams was sentenced to 10 years in federal prison for possessing child sex abuse material. He will also serve a lifetime period of supervised release and pay $45,000 in restitution to the victims in the images he possessed. Williams will be required to register as a sex offender as a result of his conviction.
The case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative to combat child sexual exploitation and abuse. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Idaho and the Idaho Attorney General’s Office partnered to prosecute the case.
The investigation and prosecution of Williams demonstrate the commitment of law enforcement agencies to protecting children from exploitation and abuse. The case serves as a reminder of the importance of reporting suspicious online activity and the need for continued efforts to combat child sex abuse material possession.
