Lapwai Man Jailed for Failing to Register as Sex Offender
A 36-year-old man from Lapwai, Idaho, has been sentenced to nine months in prison for failing to register as a sex offender. Solomon Elias Wheeler, 36, pleaded guilty to the charge in August 2016.
According to court statements, Wheeler had a 2010 conviction for having sexual contact with a minor under sixteen in the Nez Perce Tribal Court. As a result, he was required to register and update his registration under the Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act (SORNA). However, in August 2015, Wheeler failed to complete his sex offender registration.
Wheeler remained unregistered for over a year until May 2016, when he was arrested on a federal warrant. He has remained in jail since his arrest.
Senior U.S. District Judge Edward J. Lodge also ordered Wheeler to serve five years supervised release following his prison sentence.
The case was investigated by the United States Marshals Service.
Wheeler’s sentence marks another instance of the consequences of failing to register as a sex offender. In the United States, sex offenders are required by law to register with local authorities upon release from prison or upon conviction of a sex crime.
Failure to register can result in severe penalties, including imprisonment. In this case, Wheeler’s failure to register led to a nine-month prison sentence.
This case serves as a reminder of the importance of complying with sex offender registration requirements. The public has a right to know about sex offenders living in their communities, and failure to register can put public safety at risk.
