Bomb Making Suspect Pleads Guilty in Buffalo
BUFFALO, N.Y. – A 25-year-old Williamsville man has pleaded guilty to making and possessing destructive devices, according to a guilty plea entered before United States District Chief Judge William M. Skretny.
Duncan Badding, 25, of Williamsville, N.Y., faces up to 10 years in prison, a $250,000 fine, or both, for his crimes. The guilty plea was the culmination of an investigation by officers from the Amherst Police Department, under the direction of Chief John Askey, and Special Agents of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, under the direction of Resident Agent in Charge Frank Christiano.
On August 8, 2012, the Amherst Police Department and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives executed a search of Badding’s residence, at 66 Williamsburg Square in Williamsville. During the search, law enforcement officers discovered different volatile and explosive substances, chemicals and mixtures.
Upon further inspection, several of the substances were found to be homemade explosives, including Triacetone Triperoxide (TATP), a mixture of ammonium nitrate and fuel oil (ANFO), and a mixture of Tannerite. In addition, several apparent destructive devices, or combination of parts and devices designed or intended to be used or converted into destructive devices, were also found.
The explosive materials were later detonated by law enforcement officials so as to remove the threat of harm to the community. Badding’s sentencing date will be scheduled at a later date.
The explosive materials found at Badding’s residence posed a significant threat to the community. The discovery and subsequent detonation of these materials demonstrate the dedication and expertise of law enforcement officials in keeping our communities safe.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Joel L. Violanti, who is handling the case, stated that the investigation and guilty plea bring a sense of closure to the community, and emphasize the importance of vigilant law enforcement and cooperation between agencies.
