Bomb Threat Suspect Behind Bars
A 73-year-old man from La Feria has been charged with making a threat to bomb the Veteran’s Administration (VA) Hospital in Harlingen, announced U.S. Attorney Ryan K. Patrick.
According to the charges, Dennis Deane Dailey called the VA suicide prevention hotline on July 20, expressing suicidal thoughts. However, his conversation quickly took a dark turn as he claimed to be angry and threatened to shoot employees at the VA hospital in Harlingen. Furthermore, Dailey allegedly stated that he planned to kill people between the ages of 18 and 30 because they are spreading COVID-19.
The defendant also claimed to have “many guns and bombs” and would blow up the VA and kill whoever needed to be killed, according to the criminal complaint. These shocking statements led to Dailey’s arrest on July 22. He made his initial appearance the following day, at which time he was ordered into custody pending further criminal proceedings.
Dailey will appear for his detention hearing on August 11 before U.S. Magistrate Judge Ronald Morgan.
If convicted, Dailey faces up to 10 years in federal prison and a possible $250,000 maximum fine. The FBI conducted the investigation, and Assistant U.S. Attorney Oscar Ponce is prosecuting the case.
A criminal complaint is a formal accusation of criminal conduct, not evidence. A defendant is presumed innocent unless convicted through due process of law.
