Felon Arrested for Illicit Gun Possession

Joseph W. Basham, Jr. Indicted for Firearms Charge and Sex Offender Registration Failure

Ohio Man Accused of Possessing Shotgun While Being a Felon

Rome, Ohio native Joseph W. Basham, Jr., 32, has been charged with being a felon in possession of firearms and failing to register as a sex offender, according to federal authorities.

According to a two-count indictment, Basham was found in possession of a Winchester, model 50, 12 gauge shotgun in June 2015, despite having been convicted of multiple felonies between 2007 and 2012. The indictment also alleges that he failed to register or update a registration as a sex offender while traveling in interstate commerce.

The investigation into Basham’s activities was led by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the Ashtabula County Sheriff’s Department, and the United States Marshals Service. Assistant United States Attorney Jason M. Katz is prosecuting the case.

An indictment is only a charge and is not evidence of guilt. Basham is entitled to a fair trial, where the government must prove his guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.

Details of the sentence, if Basham is convicted, will be determined by the court after reviewing factors unique to this case, including his prior criminal record, role in the offense, and characteristics of the violations.
