LORAIN, OHIO – Jose Romero, a 32-year-old man from Lorain, faces serious charges after authorities seized an arsenal of 40 firearms during a recent raid. According to Steven M. Dettelbach, United States Attorney for the Northern District of Ohio, Romero was indicted today on charges of being a felon in possession of firearms.
Romero’s arrest stems from his 2005 domestic violence conviction in Lorain County, which prohibits him from owning or possessing firearms. During the raid on his homes at East 31st Street and Charleston Avenue, officers discovered not only firearms but also illegal drugs, including marijuana and cocaine.
According to court documents, Romero expressed interest to a confidential informant in purchasing large numbers of firearms, aiming to influence their availability in Lorain. He is accused of storing many of his weapons inside a safe at his grandmother’s residence on Charleston Avenue.
Dettelbach emphasized the office’s commitment to keeping firearms out of the hands of felons and others forbidden by law from owning them. ‘Whether it’s a person using a gun to commit a violent crime, a felon illegally obtaining a firearm, or a straw purchaser trying to circumvent the law, we will aggressively pursue those who would violate our nation’s firearms laws,’ Dettelbach said.
The investigation was conducted by the Lorain Police Department, the Drug Enforcement Administration, Lorain County Drug Task Force, and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. Assistant United States Attorney Robert F. Corts is handling the case against Romero.
It’s important to note that an indictment is only a charge and not evidence of guilt. Romero will be given a fair trial where the government must prove his guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
