Shocking details have emerged from Baton Rouge, Louisiana, as Jamie D. Croom, 31, faces federal murder charges for the tragic death of Deputy United States Marshal Josie Wells. The marshal lost his life while executing a warrant on a double-homicide fugitive, according to officials.
United States Attorney Walt Green announced the grim charge against Croom under Title 18, Sections 1111 and 1114 of the United States Code. Deputy Marshal Wells was part of an operation targeting a notorious fugitive when gunfire erupted, leaving the law enforcement officer critically injured.
Drew J. Wade, Chief of Public Affairs for the U.S. Marshals Service, issued a somber statement: “Deputy Marshal Wells died in the line of duty at approximately 11:00 a.m. today. He was on a team serving a warrant when the shooting occurred.” The fugitive was also shot and is currently receiving medical attention.
The investigation into this harrowing incident is being spearheaded by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the Baton Rouge Police Department, with support from various agencies including the East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office, Louisiana State Police, ATF, Pointe Coupee Sheriff’s Office, and both District Attorney’s Offices for the Nineteenth and Eighteenth Judicial Districts.
This case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorneys M. Patricia Jones and Robert W. Piedrahita, who are tasked with bringing justice to the fallen officer and his family.
As per standard procedure, Croom is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law or through a guilty plea. The grim incident has once again highlighted the dangers faced by law enforcement officers every day as they strive to keep our communities safe.”
