A Lauderdale man’s reckless driving led to his downfall as officers found him in possession of a firearm.
Levi Gibbs, Jr., 51, was sentenced to 72 months in prison for being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm, announced Acting U.S. Attorney Darren J. LaMarca and Michelle Sutphin, Special Agent in Charge of the Federal Bureau of Investigation in Mississippi.
On March 27, 2020, Meridian Police Department officers stopped a vehicle being driven by Gibbs after observing him crossing over the center line of the road and speeding. When approached, an officer spotted a pistol in an ankle holster on Gibbs’ right leg.
Gibbs’ checkered past caught up with him as he has multiple felony convictions, including several for drug crimes. He currently faces an Armed Robbery indictment in Lowndes County Circuit Court.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Meridian Police Department investigated the case, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Charles W. Kirkham handling the prosecution.
The case is part of the joint federal, state, and local Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) Program, aimed at reducing violent crime through collaborative efforts.
As a convicted felon, Gibbs is prohibited from possessing any firearm under federal law, making his possession of the pistol a serious offense.
