In a daring operation, the American Flying Squadron, operating out of Miami and adjacent coastal towns, seized a British schooner, the Annabelle, off the coast of Florida, approximately 40 miles south of Miami, on Sunday, February 12, 1922. The vessel, carrying a staggering 11,500 cases of whiskey, was met by 11 aircraft, painted a battleship gray, which descended upon the schooner from all directions, their machine guns at the ready. The crew of 21 men, caught off guard, offered no resistance as the flying machines swooped down.
