Boston’s former pediatric cardiac anesthesiologist fellow, Christopher Sheerer, 37, has pleaded guilty to distributing and possessing child sexual abuse material (CSAM), leaving the city reeling from the shock of this trusted medical professional’s descent into pedophilia. According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Sheerer faces decades in prison for his crimes.
Sheerer, who was once a fellow in pediatric cardiac anesthesiology at Boston Children’s Hospital and had previously worked at Johns Hopkins, is accused of distributing child pornography, possession of child pornography, and sexual exploitation of children. The charges carry mandatory minimum sentences ranging from five to 30 years, along with fines up to $250,000.
The investigation began in May 2024 when authorities discovered Sheerer was a member of an encrypted chat group designed for “dads, uncles, and babysitters.” To gain entry, members were required to upload nude photos of children under 13. Sheerer used a known child’s image to join the group, his IP traced back to Johns Hopkins University.
Upon arrest, authorities found numerous chats on Sheerer’s phone, including images of young children. Devices seized for analysis revealed dozens of chats involving CSAM and several pornographic images of the same child, created in 2023.
The case is part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative aimed at combating child sexual exploitation. The investigation involved multiple agencies, including Homeland Security Investigations and the Boston Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Jessica Soto and Anne Paruti are prosecuting the case.
Sentencing for Sheerer is scheduled for December 18, 2025, in federal court. His guilty plea ensures that justice will be served for the innocent victims involved in this despicable crime.
