Boston Man Arrested for Illegal Reentry

Yesterday, Melvin Baez Peguero, a 46-year-old Dominican national residing in Boston, was taken into custody by federal authorities for illegally reentering the United States after being deported.

According to the indictment, Peguero was previously deported in April 2013 and was found living in Boston in November 2020. He has been charged with one count of unlawful reentry of a deported alien.

The charge carries a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison, up to five years of supervised release, and a fine of up to $250,000. Peguero will be subject to deportation upon completion of his sentence.

Acting United States Attorney Nathanial R. Mendell and William S. Walker, Acting Special Agent in Charge of the Homeland Security Investigations, made the announcement. Assistant U.S. Attorney Craig Estes of Mendell’s Narcotics and Money Laundering Unit is prosecuting the case.

Peguero was detained following an initial appearance before U.S. District Court Magistrate Judge Judith G. Dein. His next court appearance is pending.

The case highlights the ongoing issue of illegal immigration and the consequences that individuals face when they reenter the country without proper documentation.
