LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Benjamin Boyd, a resident of Hodgenville, Kentucky, will spend the next 6.5 years behind bars after being sentenced yesterday to 78 months in prison for receiving and possessing child pornography. Senior Judge Charles R. Simpson, III, also imposed a ten-year term of supervised release following Boyd’s incarceration. The sentence comes after Boyd pleaded guilty to the charges.
United States Attorney John E. Kuhn, Jr. didn’t mince words when addressing the severity of the crime. “Receipt and possession of child pornography are not victimless crimes,” Kuhn stated. “Every image and every video in this case document a horrific moment of pain and damage inflicted upon an innocent and defenseless child. Circulating and viewing these images simply perpetuate the damage and pain for the victims.” Kuhn characterized Boyd’s sentence and the restitution order as “a just and appropriate outcome.”
Court documents reveal the depth of Boyd’s depravity. He admitted to possessing a staggering 3,595 images and 2,778 videos depicting child pornography. The case originated on August 29, 2015, when an investigator with the Kentucky Office of the Attorney General detected the download of 8 files of child pornography originating from an IP address traced back to Boyd. This initial discovery triggered a full investigation.
On October 15, 2015, investigators executed a search warrant at Boyd’s residence, seizing multiple electronic storage devices. A forensic examination of these devices confirmed the presence of extensive child pornography, including images of prepubescent children and depictions of sadomasochistic conduct. The investigation further revealed that Boyd had been actively downloading this material through a peer-to-peer program over a period of more than a year, from May 4, 2014, through September 9, 2015.
The Court ordered Boyd to pay $65,000 in restitution, to be divided amongst nine identified victims of the images and videos found on his devices. Assistant United States Attorney A. Spencer McKiness prosecuted the case, with the Kentucky Attorney General’s Office spearheading the initial investigation. This case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a national initiative aimed at combating the exploitation and abuse of children.
Project Safe Childhood, launched in 2006, coordinates federal, state, and local resources to apprehend predators and rescue victims.
