McALLEN, Texas – In a gritty turn of justice, Cuban national Eugene Agustin Munoz-Canellas, 55, from Mission, has been sentenced to federal prison for posing as an U.S. Border Patrol agent and soliciting bribes. The announcement came from U.S. Attorney Kenneth Magidson.
Munoz-Canellas pleaded guilty on Nov. 16, 2016, and today, U.S. District Judge Randy Crane imposed a sentence of 18 months behind bars. As a legal permanent resident and not a citizen, he awaits deportation proceedings upon release.
From July 2015 to Sept. 23, 2016, Munoz-Canellas fraudulently claimed the role of an U.S. Border Patrol agent to solicit illegal payments from individuals seeking legal status in the United States. His extensive criminal history of theft and fraud, including numerous instances of fraud, was a factor in Judge Crane’s decision to protect the community and uphold the rule of law.
Munoz-Canellas will remain in custody pending transfer to a U.S. Bureau of Prisons facility to be determined. The investigation into his deceitful actions was conducted by the Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Office of Professional Responsibility and Homeland Security Investigations, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Kristen Rees handling the prosecution.
