New Orleans Man Admits to Possessing Gun in Furtherance of Drug Dealing
NEW ORLEANS, LA – U.S. Attorney Duane A. Evans has announced that Bradley Bright, 32, of New Orleans, Louisiana, pleaded guilty today to possessing a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime before United States District Judge Jay C. Zainey.
Bright admitted to distributing crack cocaine near a store on Basin Street outside the French Quarter in February 2020. The New Orleans Police Department observed the sale and stopped the buyer, who had a crack pipe in her pocket and crack in her purse. After confirming the transaction was a hand-to-hand drug sale, the officers attempted to arrest Bright, who fled. A brief chase ensued, and the officers subdued and arrested Bright. A .40 caliber handgun that had been reported stolen and was fully loaded with 15 rounds was found near the location of Bright’s arrest.
The charges against Bright include distribution of heroin and cocaine base, being a felon in possession of a firearm, and possessing a firearm in furtherance of drug trafficking. He faces a sentence of at least 5 years imprisonment up to life, a $250,000 fine, up to five years supervised release following any term of imprisonment, and a $100 special assessment fee.
Sentencing is set for September 7, 2021, before District Judge Zainey. U.S. Attorney Evans praised the work of the New Orleans Police Department and the Drug Enforcement Administration in investigating this matter. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney David Haller.
Bright’s crime demonstrates the dangers of gun violence and the importance of law enforcement’s efforts to combat it. As U.S. Attorney Evans stated, the successful prosecution of this case is a testament to the dedicated work of law enforcement agencies in New Orleans.
The case highlights the ongoing struggle against drug trafficking in New Orleans and the need for continued support from the community. The New Orleans Police Department and the Drug Enforcement Administration urge anyone with information about drug-related crimes to come forward and report it to the authorities.
