Medford, OR – In a string of brazen bank robberies that left a trail of fear and financial ruin in its wake, 45-year-old Bradley William Monical, of The Dalles, Oregon, has been sentenced to 32 years in federal prison for his role in the heists.

According to the FBI, Monical was responsible for seven bank robberies in Southern Oregon, Eastern Washington, and Idaho, all of which took place in 2010. The robberies, which netted Monical a total of $68,698, were committed with the use of a pistol and what appeared to be a hand gun.

The list of robberies includes:

  • June 11, 2010, at Bank of America in Redmond, OR
  • August 27, 2010, at Wells Fargo Bank in Coeur d’Alene, ID
  • September 4, 2010, at Banner Bank in Walla Walla, WA
  • October 2, 2010, at Sterling Savings Bank in Spokane Valley, WA
  • November 9, 2010, at Sterling Savings Bank in Medford, OR
  • December 2, 2010, at U.S. Bank in Kennewick, WA
  • December 20, 2010, at Sterling Savings Bank in Klamath Falls, OR

Monical was arrested in 2012 after escaping from the Jackson County Jail, where he was being held on Oregon bank robbery charges. He was later found in Oregon City and was taken into custody by the U.S. Marshals Service.

Monical’s girlfriend, Carolyn Gibson, also faced charges related to his escape and was sentenced to probation in February 2015.

In addition to his prison sentence, Monical was ordered to pay $68,698 in restitution and to serve three years of supervised release.

The bank robbery and escape investigations were conducted by the FBI, U.S. Marshals Service, and local police departments in Southern Oregon, Eastern Washington, and Idaho. The federal case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Judith R. Harper.

Monical’s pending charges of robbery and attempted murder in Marion County, Oregon, remain outstanding.

The 32-year sentence handed down by U.S. District Judge Michael McShane is a significant blow to Monical and a testament to the tireless efforts of law enforcement agencies and prosecutors in bringing him to justice.
