TACOMA, WA – Brady Lee Eltz, 39, of Pierce County, Wash., faced a federal judge in Tacoma this week and was sentenced to four years for unlawful possession of a machinegun and firearms. The sentence followed his October 2023 arrest at an auto glass repair shop in Fife, Wash.
Eltz has been held in custody since his federal arrest on October 31, 2023. At the sentencing hearing, Chief U.S. District Judge David G. Estudillo expressed alarm over the dangerous weapons Eltz possessed and the unclear motivation behind them.
On October 4, 2023, Fife Police were called to a shop after workers reported seeing firearms in Eltz’s vehicle. A Glock with an illegal auto-sear switch, known as a machinegun, was among the weapons found. It had been reported stolen. Both handguns had rounds chambered.
During a search of Eltz’s vehicle and his person, police discovered additional firearms, including a modified rifle that fired automatically, improvised explosive devices (IEDs), hundreds of rounds of ammunition, tactical gear, GPS trackers, knives, and a voice-changing device.
Eltz’s history includes previous firearm-related convictions. In 2007, he had been found with an arsenal of weapons, false credentials, and disguises. His most recent conviction was in 2013 for unlawful possession of firearms, for which he served five years in prison.
The ATF led the investigation into Eltz’s activities, assisted by the Fife Police Department, the Pierce County Sheriff’s Office, and the Washington State Patrol. Assistant U.S. Attorney Marci L. Ellsworth prosecuted the case.
