Brandon McNamara, 26, of Pineville, La., is going to federal prison for two and a half years after admitting he stored and traded child pornography online through a cloud storage account. The sentence, handed down Friday by U.S. District Judge Dee D. Drell, marks the latest conviction in the government’s relentless crackdown on digital predators exploiting children.
McNamara pleaded guilty on August 28, 2017, to one count of possession of child pornography. He now faces 30 months behind bars followed by five years of supervised release. As part of his sentence, he must register as a sex offender—a status that will follow him for years, restricting where he can live and work.
The case began in 2016 when Canadian law enforcement arrested a British Columbia man for distributing child pornography online. During their investigation, Canadian authorities identified 57 users linked to the suspect’s network—including McNamara, who used an online alias to exchange illicit material. That intel was swiftly passed to U.S. officials, triggering a cross-border manhunt that led to McNamara’s doorstep in Central Louisiana.
On December 9, 2016, federal agents questioned McNamara. He didn’t fight it. He admitted on the spot that he possessed child porn and confirmed the files were stored in a cloud-based account. Investigators didn’t need a warrant to dig deeper—his confession opened the floodgates. The digital trail sealed his fate.
This case falls under Project Safe Childhood, a DOJ-led initiative targeting individuals who exploit children through the internet. Spearheaded by U.S. Attorneys’ Offices and the Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section, the program pools federal, state, and local resources to hunt down predators, rescue victims, and dismantle networks of abuse. The investigation was conducted by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and the Vancouver Royal Canadian Mounted Police. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Jamilla A. Bynog and David J. Ayo prosecuted. The public is urged to report suspected child predators via ICE’s hotline at (866) 347-2423, online at www.ice.gov/exec/forms/hsi-tips/tips.asp, or through the Operation Predator app. Tips can be anonymous.
