Brendon Daniel Reed, 43, of North Sioux City, South Dakota, is headed to federal prison after robbing the United Bank of Moville and leading law enforcement on a dangerous high-speed chase that ended in a fiery crash. On March 20, 2018, Reed stormed into the bank, seized $13,821, and bolted—launching a desperate flight that endangered motorists across western Iowa.
Reed fled the scene in a stolen vehicle, flooring it through city streets and county roads at breakneck speeds. Witnesses reported the car swerving, tires screeching, before Reed lost control and plowed off the roadway. The impact destroyed the stolen car. Shaken but alive, Reed was found nearby and taken into custody. Every stolen dollar was recovered at the scene.
On December 19, 2018, Reed pleaded guilty to one count of Bank Robbery in federal court. At sentencing on May 14, 2019, Chief United States District Court Judge Leonard T. Strand handed down a 105-month prison term—more than eight years behind bars. Reed was also ordered to pay full restitution of $13,821.00 to the United Bank of Moville.
In addition to prison time and restitution, Reed must serve a mandatory three-year term of supervised release upon completion of his sentence. Federal parole was abolished decades ago—meaning Reed will serve every month of his sentence under lock and key, with no early release.
Multiple law enforcement agencies converged on the case, including the Moville, Iowa Police Department, the Woodbury County Sheriff’s Office, the Iowa State Patrol, the FBI, the Kingsley, Iowa Police Department, the Plymouth County Sheriff’s Office, and the Woodbury County Attorney’s Office. The investigation spanned jurisdictions, highlighting the regional threat posed by armed financial crimes.
Assistant United States Attorney Forde Fairchild prosecuted the case. Reed remains in U.S. Marshals custody, awaiting transport to a federal prison.
