California Felon Sentenced for Firearm Possession at Juneau Airport
Anchorage, Alaska – In a shocking turn of events, Brent Ernst Hansen, a 42-year-old convicted felon from Indio, California, was sentenced to serve 34 months in federal prison for illegally possessing a firearm at the Juneau International Airport.
According to court documents, on October 16, 2017, Hansen attempted to clear airport security with a backpack containing a loaded Glock 19, 9mm pistol. TSA officials recognized a suspicious object as Hansen’s bag passed through the X-Ray machine, prompting a thorough investigation. When confronted by law enforcement, Hansen claimed he had forgotten about the firearm, and when asked about his legal status to possess a firearm, Hansen indicated that he did not know.
A check of the firearm’s serial number revealed that the firearm was reported stolen, leading to Hansen’s subsequent arrest. A records check revealed that Hansen has multiple felony convictions with the State of California for crimes including burglary, possession of a controlled substance, attempted grand theft, and felon in possession of a firearm.
The investigation was conducted by the Juneau Police Department (JPD) and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), with the successful prosecution led by Assistant U.S. Attorney Jack Schmidt.
As a convicted felon, Hansen is not permitted to possess a firearm, making his actions a serious violation of federal law. The sentence handed down by Chief U.S. District Judge Timothy M. Burgess reflects the severity of Hansen’s crimes, and serves as a reminder of the consequences of breaking the law.
