Lynchburg, VIRGINIA – A local physician has been sentenced for handing out prescription narcotics to a woman outside the bounds of medical practice.
Stanley Elmer Heatwole, 73, of Staunton, Virginia, waived his right to an indictment and pleaded guilty to a federal charge of distributing narcotics. The case against Heatwole centered on his prescribing of hydrocodone to a female patient from 2009 to 2014. This relationship led to Heatwole issuing prescriptions that were not for a legitimate medical purpose and were outside the usual course of professional practice.
Heatwole, who practiced at Carilion Stonewall Jackson Hospital Emergency Department in Lexington, was sentenced to three years of probation, six months of which must be spent on home confinement. On top of this, he was ordered to pay a $3,000 fine and a special assessment of $100.
The investigation into Heatwole’s actions was led by the Tactical Diversion Squad of the Drug Enforcement Administration and the Virginia State Police. Assistant United States Attorney Jennie L. M. Waering is prosecuting the case on behalf of the United States.
The case serves as a reminder of the dangers of healthcare professionals abusing their power and the consequences that come with it. Heatwole’s actions put patients and the community at risk, and it is reassuring to see him held accountable.
Heatwole’s license to practice medicine was suspended in 2014. The specifics of his sentencing serve as a warning to those in positions of trust who would abuse it.
The prosecution of Heatwole’s case highlights the importance of maintaining the integrity of the healthcare system. It is a strong reminder that healthcare professionals who engage in illicit activities will be brought to justice.
