SHERMAN, Texas – In a stunning betrayal of trust, Wellington Mandhlazi, a once trusted tax preparer, has been sentenced to 21 months in federal prison for his role in preparing fraudulent tax returns. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Texas announced the sentence today.
Mandhlazi pleaded guilty on May 16, 2013, admitting to aiding and assisting in the preparation of false federal income tax returns. He was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Ron Clark on Dec. 16, 2013, and ordered to pay $147,851.00 in restitution.
The fraudulent activity, carried out by Mandhlazi between 2009 and 2013, included fabricating educational expenses and education tax credits. His deceitful actions were aimed at defrauding the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), according to court documents.
Estimates suggest that the false returns prepared by Mandhlazi resulted in a staggering $147,851.00 loss for the IRS. The defendant is required to report to begin serving his sentence by Feb. 4, 2014.
