A Brentwood man has been exposed for his dirty dealings in the world of bankruptcy, pleading guilty to making a false material statement under oath in a bankruptcy case.
Michael Ross Smith, 44, of Brentwood, Tenn., made the false statement in an examination conducted by the U.S. Trustee, claiming he was no longer employed by a Nashville business at the time of the examination.
However, the U.S. Trustee discovered that Smith continued to be employed by the business as the President of Sales, earning an annual base salary of $150,000.
The investigation into Smith’s deceitful actions was conducted by the FBI with assistance from the U.S. Trustee.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Stephanie N. Toussaint and Special Asst. U.S. Attorney Lloyd E. Mueller represent the government in this case.
Smith’s guilty plea comes with a hefty price tag, facing up to 5 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
He will be sentenced on August 5, 2015, a date that marks the beginning of his downfall.
The U.S. Trustee Program works tirelessly to protect the integrity of the bankruptcy system, ensuring that cases are administered and litigated fairly and justly.
Smith’s actions are a stark reminder of the importance of honesty and transparency in financial dealings.
