A Helena man has been handed down a four-year prison sentence for his role in a methamphetamine trafficking operation, U.S. Attorney Jesse Laslovich announced Tuesday.
Bret Russell Hamlin, 54, had pleaded guilty in January to attempted possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine. He will serve four years and nine months in prison, followed by five years of supervised release, according to court documents.
The investigation began in August 2021, when a postal inspector intercepted a suspicious package mailed from Fresno, California, to an address in Helena. Inside the package, authorities found approximately three pounds of methamphetamine.
Law enforcement officers served a search warrant on Hamlin’s residence and discovered additional quantities of meth, as well as drug paraphernalia, digital scales, plastic baggies, more than $2,000 in cash, and a pistol.
Prosecutor Jeffrey K. Starnes led the case against Hamlin. The investigation was a collaborative effort between the Missouri River Drug Task Force, the U.S. Postal Service, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.
The case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence by bringing together law enforcement and community organizations.
Hamlin’s sentence is a result of his involvement in the methamphetamine distribution ring, which operated in the Helena area. The investigation and subsequent prosecution demonstrate the importance of interagency cooperation in combating illicit activity.
U.S. Attorney Jesse Laslovich emphasized the significance of this case, stating that the PSN program is committed to making neighborhoods safer for everyone.
This case serves as a reminder of the consequences of engaging in illicit activities, and the importance of community involvement in preventing and addressing crime.
As the Department of Justice continues to prioritize the safety of our communities, this case highlights the impact of collaborative enforcement efforts in reducing violent crime and promoting public safety.
