Brian Acosta, 21, Charged with Unlawful Firearm Possession

HARRISBURG – A Harrisburg man is behind bars after being charged with unlawful possession of a firearm, a crime he allegedly committed over 7 years ago.

According to the indictment, on December 27, 2015, Harrisburg police officers observed Brian Acosta, 21, walking in the 1500 block of Vernon Street at approximately 8:30 p.m., brandishing a firearm. Acosta allegedly threw the gun away and fled, but was apprehended by authorities and the firearm was recovered.

The investigation is being conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Harrisburg Bureau of Police, with Assistant United States Attorney Meredith A. Taylor handling the prosecution.

Acosta is presumed innocent until proven guilty in court. If convicted, he faces a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison, a term of supervised release, and a fine.

The case highlights the ongoing efforts of law enforcement to keep communities safe from firearms and violent crime.
