Computer Hacker Exposed in Texas

A 40-year-old man from Boerne, Texas, has pleaded guilty to computer hacking and faces up to five years in federal prison. Brian Neal Bond, 40, admitted to hacking into a local business and shutting down their computer operations.

According to court records, Bond worked as an Information Technology Help Desk manager at the company’s Boerne facility from September 2010 to April 2015. He left the company to take a position with another company, but continued to access his former employer’s computers without authorization.

Bond pleaded guilty to one count of computer intrusion and damage. He admitted to accessing his former employer’s computers 124 times between June 2015 and January 2016, and shutting down their trading system on one occasion. The interruption resulted in an estimated loss of $10,816 to his former employer, which Bond has already paid into the registry of the court.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation conducted the investigation, and Assistant United States Attorney William R. Harris is prosecuting the case on behalf of the government. Bond remains out on bond pending sentencing, which is scheduled for June 28, 2017.

The sentencing hearing for Brian Neal Bond is scheduled for June 28, 2017. The outcome of the case will be closely watched by the cybersecurity community and will serve as a warning to others who engage in similar activities.
