In a brazen scheme, Jorge Ernesto Blanco-Rodriguez, a 43-year-old Cuban and Spanish citizen, has been ordered to federal prison for conspiring to commit wire fraud. Blanco-Rodriguez resided in Havana, Cuba, and operated a business from his home country, selling stolen credit and debit card numbers to various individuals over the Internet.

According to authorities, the investigation began after two Mexican nationals were arrested for credit card fraud. During the execution of search warrants related to those arrests, investigators identified Blanco-Rodriguez as the individual selling the credit card information. He was ultimately arrested as he traveled to Florida to visit family.

A staggering 12,000 credit and debit card numbers were found in Blanco-Rodriguez’s possession, many of which originated from large data breaches. Approximately $788,000 in fraudulent transactions have been identified from the compromised accounts.

Blanco-Rodriguez pleaded guilty to the charges on April 18, 2016. U.S. District Judge Randy Crane ordered him to serve a total of 135 months in federal prison and pay $602,864.13 in restitution. He will face deportation proceedings following his release from prison.

The Secret Service and McAllen Police Department conducted the investigation. Assistant U.S. Attorney Joseph Leonard prosecuted the case. Blanco-Rodriguez will remain in custody pending his transfer to a U.S. Bureau of Prisons facility to be determined in the near future.
