Salem Man Sentenced to 25 Years in Prison for Producing Child Pornography

CONCORD, N.H.: Brian Powell, 34, of Salem, New Hampshire, was sentenced to spend 25 years in federal prison for producing child pornography, announced Acting United States Attorney John J. Farley.

Brian Powell, a resident of Salem, New Hampshire, was found guilty of producing child pornography, a crime that is abhorrent to society. On at least two occasions, Powell used anonymous internet chat services to initiate contact with minor females, convincing them to engage in sexually explicit conduct, which he then recorded without their knowledge. Powell even went so far as to use advanced computer software to track the victims’ IP addresses, allowing him to reengage in conversation with them and threaten to publicize the recorded videos unless they complied with his demands.

The investigation into Powell’s crimes was led by the Salem, New Hampshire Police Department, with assistance from the New Hampshire Crimes Against Children Task Force, Homeland Security Investigations, and the Rochester and Derry police departments. The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Georgiana Konesky.

As part of his sentence, Powell will be on supervised release for 10 years following his release from prison. This sentence reflects the severity of the crime and the need to protect society from individuals who prey on the vulnerable.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office will continue to work with law enforcement partners to identify and prosecute those who abuse children by producing child pornography. This case is a stark reminder of the importance of vigilance in protecting our children from online exploitation.

In February 2006, the U.S. introduced Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative designed to protect children from online exploitation and abuse. The program has been successful in marshaling federal, state, and local resources to better locate, apprehend, and prosecute individuals who exploit children via the internet, as well as identify and rescue victims.

Brian Powell’s crime is a reprehensible example of the harm that can be caused by individuals who produce child pornography. His sentence serves as a reminder that such crimes will not be tolerated and that those who perpetrate them will be held accountable.
