Defendant Sentenced to 39 Months in Prison for Cyberstalking and Interstate Stalking
TUCSON, Ariz. – In a shocking case of cybercrime, Brian Thomas Balda, a 52-year-old man from Oregon, was sentenced to 39 months in prison for his role in a campaign to intimidate and harass a former United States government official.
According to court records, Balda engaged in a 10-month campaign to send abusive and profane text messages and voicemails to the victim. The situation escalated when Balda drove from Oregon to Arizona to confront the victim, and was subsequently arrested by law enforcement near the victim’s home.
A search of Balda’s car revealed four knives, binoculars, and a replica handgun, further indicating the severity of the situation. The FBI Phoenix Division’s Tucson office, along with the Pima County Sheriff’s Department and the University of Arizona Police Department, investigated the matter.
The United States Attorney’s Office, District of Arizona, handled the prosecution, securing a guilty verdict in June 2025. The conviction marked a significant victory for law enforcement and the victim, who can now begin the process of healing and moving forward.
Balda’s sentence, which includes 36 months of supervised release, serves as a reminder of the consequences of engaging in such behavior. Cyberstalking and interstate stalking are serious crimes that can have devastating effects on victims, and this case demonstrates the importance of holding perpetrators accountable.
