Bloodied Hands: Briayell Moore Sentenced for Federal Housing and Food Aid Fraud
In a gritty Pittsburgh courtroom, the sentence was as tough as the crime. Briayell Moore, 43, of Laurel, Maryland, has been sentenced to three years of probation and ordered to pay over $50,000 in restitution following her conviction for siphoning off federal housing and food assistance payments.
Moore was caught with her hands in the till, deceitfully securing benefits meant for lower-income citizens. From June 2010 to May 2017, she misrepresented her household’s finances, income, and marital status to pocket Housing Assistance Payments from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Payments from the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
Senior United States District Judge Joy Flowers Conti didn’t mince words during the sentencing hearing. ‘Your actions not only lined your pockets but denied legitimate assistance to those in need,’ Judge Conti said, emphasizing Moore’s sentence as a stern reminder of the consequences for such crimes.
Briayell Moore’s fraud wasn’t just about money; it was about greed and the betrayal of trust. The court ordered her to pay restitution directly back into the coffers of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and the U.S. Department of Agriculture, ensuring the funds go where they were intended – supporting struggling families.
Assistant United States Attorney Nicole A. Stockey’s prosecution was a testament to tenacity and dedication. The justice system is served when wrongdoers like Moore are held accountable. United States Attorney Eric G. Olshan commended the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development Office of Inspector General, the U.S. Department of Agriculture Office of Inspector General, and the Allegheny Housing Authority’s Investigations Unit for their roles in this successful prosecution.
As Moore stands to face the reality of her actions, the grimy truth remains: some will always seek to exploit the system at the expense of those who need it most. But with every conviction like this one, the line is drawn clear – and justice prevails.
