Bribery Lands Ex-Officer 2 Years in Prison
In a shocking case of corruption, Michael J. Garland, a 42-year-old former correctional officer, has been sentenced to two years in federal prison for his role in a bribery scheme.
According to court documents, Garland worked as a correctional officer at the Federal Correctional Institution Medium in Sumter County, Florida. On May 24, 2013, federal agents observed Garland meeting with an inmate on a video surveillance system. When agents searched the inmate, they discovered a cache of contraband, including a cellular phone with accessories, a prepaid phone card, ten packs of cigarettes, and snuff tobacco.
Garland admitted to smuggling the items into the prison in exchange for cash payments from the inmate, totaling $4,200. The inmate made these payments through a third party, further implicating the extent of Garland’s corruption.
The investigation into Garland’s activities was conducted by the Office of the Inspector General and the Federal Bureau of Prisons Special Investigations Unit. Assistant United States Attorney Robert E. Bodnar, Jr. prosecuted the case against Garland.
On February 28, 2014, Garland pleaded guilty to the offense. The court subsequently ordered Garland to forfeit $4,200, which are traceable proceeds of the offense. This sentence sends a clear message that corruption will not be tolerated within our nation’s correctional facilities.
