Bristol Woman Guilty of Tax Return Scam
ROBIN REID, a 54-year-old woman from Bristol, Connecticut, has admitted to a decade-long scheme of preparing false federal income tax returns for her clients, causing a staggering $1,126,011 in tax loss for the government.
According to court documents, REID operated a tax return preparation practice from at least 2005 until 2015. During this time, she falsified information on numerous returns by inflating deductions for medical and dental expenses, charitable contributions, employee-related expenses, and other expenses. REID also created fictitious Schedule C forms to fabricate deductible business expenses and fictitious Schedule E forms to inflate expenses relating to rental properties.
By routinely overstating deductions, REID reduced taxable income on the respective returns, causing significant losses for the government. Her actions have now led to a guilty plea, with REID facing a maximum term of imprisonment of three years, a fine of up to approximately $2.2 million, and restitution.
REID’s clients are required to resolve their own tax liability with the Internal Revenue Service. The Internal Revenue Service – Criminal Investigation Division investigated the matter, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Christopher W. Schmeisser handling the prosecution.
Chief U.S. District Judge Janet C. Hall accepted REID’s guilty plea and scheduled sentencing for December 21, 2017. The case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of honesty and integrity in financial dealings.
The guilty plea marks a significant victory for law enforcement agencies and the government, who have worked tirelessly to uncover and prosecute tax return scams like REID’s.
