BOSTON — A gritty tale of illegal firearms came to light as Michael Whitfield, 43, from Brockton, entered a guilty plea in federal court for unlawful possession of a Glock pistol and ammunition.
Whitfield’s crime spree reached its apex on March 6, 2023, when law enforcement responded to a vehicle accident in Brockton. The scene was reeked of alcohol, with an empty tequila bottle found on the passenger seat floor. But it was the firearm discovery that would change Whitfield’s life forever.
Officers located a Glock 19X .9mm pistol loaded with 18 rounds on the driver’s side floorboard, nestled between Whitfield’s legs. The grim reality of his past caught up with him when authorities revealed Whitfield’s felony conviction from 2006, which bans him from owning firearms and ammunition.
Punishment for such a crime is steep: up to 15 years in prison, three years of supervised release, and a fine reaching $250,000. U.S. District Court Judge Allison D. Burroughs will deliver the sentence on Oct. 8, 2024.
Today’s announcement was made by Acting United States Attorney Joshua S. Levy and James M. Ferguson, Special Agent in Charge of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms & Explosives, Boston Field Division. The Plymouth County District Attorney’s Office, Massachusetts State Police, Brockton Police Department, and Brockton Fire Department were instrumental in this investigation.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Luke A. Goldworm of the Major Crimes Unit is handling the prosecution of this case, a stark reminder that the streets of Brockton are under watch.
