Second-Degree Murder Charges Bring Guilty Plea in Indian Country
In a shocking turn of events, Brodie Coonsis, a 28-year-old man from Zuni, New Mexico, has pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in Indian Country.
According to court documents, Coonsis shot and killed a man at the victim’s residence in Zuni on February 26. The motive behind the crime was Coonsis’s use of drugs and a prior dispute with the victim.
Coonsis, who is currently in custody, traveled to the victim’s house on the Pueblo of Zuni, where he fired his shotgun four times as he followed the victim up the stairs. Eventually, he ended the man’s life.
The Gallup Resident Agency of the FBI, along with the Zuni Police Department, investigated this case and gathered evidence. Assistant U.S. Attorney Nicholas Marshall is prosecuting the case.
Coonsis faces up to life in prison for his crime. His sentencing has not been scheduled yet.
The people of Zuni are left to wonder how such a tragedy could occur. As the community comes to terms with this devastating event, Coonsis’s guilty plea serves as a reminder of the harsh consequences of violent crime.
