Takiem Ewing, Carjacking, New York 2014

Bronx native TAKIEM EWING, also known as ‘Mulla,’ has entered a guilty plea in White Plains Federal Court for his role in the chilling carjackings that led to the deaths of two livery cab drivers. According to Acting United States Attorney Joon H. Kim for the Southern District of New York, Ewing is facing a life sentence after being linked to the August 2014 murders of Maodo Kane and Aboubacar Bah.

The victims, both innocent cabbies, were killed during separate carjackings in the Bronx. Their untimely deaths have now been marked with justice as Ewing has admitted his participation in these tragic events. The plea comes amidst a backdrop of commendable investigative efforts by local and federal law enforcement agencies.

Details from the indictment and plea proceedings reveal that Ewing not only participated but was also an active member of the violent crew responsible for both carjackings. On August 5, 2014, Maodo Kane’s life was cut short in a gunfight during the carjacking on Hunter Avenue. Just a week later, Aboubacar Bah met a similar fate near Bryant Avenue.

Three others, Tyrone Felder, Kareem Martin, and Tommy Smalls, have also been implicated in these crimes. Their trials are set to commence next year before United States District Judge Vincent L. Briccetti. The joint efforts of the FBI, NYPD, and Yonkers Police Department were pivotal in bringing Ewing to justice.

Acting Manhattan U.S. Attorney Joon H. Kim expressed gratitude for the collaborative work that led to this conviction. ‘Today, Takiem Ewing has admitted and pled guilty to his participation in these two senseless killings,’ said Kim. ‘We hope that this conviction gives the victims’ friends and families a measure of justice.’

The sentencing is scheduled for July 12, 2017, at which time Ewing will face a mandatory minimum term of 35 years in prison, with life as the potential maximum. Assistant United States Attorneys Michael Gerber and Scott Hartman are leading the prosecution.
