BRONX, NY – James ‘Mitch’ Capers, a notorious member of the Leland Avenue Crew, was sentenced to 42 years in federal prison today for his role in the murder of Allen McQueen and for participating in a violent drug trafficking operation. Capers was convicted following a jury trial in December 2016.
The sentence, handed down by United States District Judge William H. Pauley III, follows Capers’ conviction on charges including murder, racketeering, and narcotics conspiracies. Acting United States Attorney Joon H. Kim emphasized the impact of gang violence on communities, stating that ‘gangs do enormous damage through drug dealing and accompanying violence.’
According to court documents, Capers was a key figure in the Leland Avenue Crew’s control over crack cocaine distribution in the Bronx. His gang engaged in numerous violent disputes with rivals, leading to multiple shootings. On July 7, 2015, Capers confronted McQueen while he held his one-year-old daughter, shooting and killing him.
Acting Manhattan U.S. Attorney Kim praised the investigative work of the New York City Police Department, the Drug Enforcement Administration, and Homeland Security Investigations. The Bronx County District Attorney’s Office also received recognition for their support in this case.
The prosecution team, led by Assistant United States Attorneys Scott Hartman, Jessica Lonergan, and Jason Swergold, played a crucial role in securing the conviction. Capers is now one of many gang members who have faced justice in the wake of this intense investigation and prosecution effort.
