MISSOULA, MT — In a gritty arraignment before U.S. Magistrate Judge Jeremiah C. Lynch, Fabjan Alameti, a 21-year-old man from the Bronx, pleaded not guilty to charges of making false statements to federal authorities in connection with an international terrorism investigation.
The defendant, who had recently traveled from New York to Bozeman, was arrested on April 3, 2019, at a local shooting range after reportedly renting and taking possession of an M1A firearm. Alameti faces a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison if convicted of the most serious charge against him.
Alameti is accused of making false statements to the FBI, a crime that also carries a fine of $250,000 and three years of supervised release. The arraignment was conducted today, with the judge ordering Alameti’s detention pending further proceedings. A detention hearing has been scheduled for May 15.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Jeff Starnes and Trial Attorney Rebecca Magnone from the National Security Division’s Counterterrorism Section are handling the prosecution of this case, which was investigated by the FBI.
