Edgar Jesus Avila Alvarado, Fentanyl Smuggling, New Jersey 2024

CAMDEN, N.J. – The gritty streets of New York City have once again been a scene of justice as Edgar Jesus Avila Alvarado, 46, from the Bronx, was sentenced to 59 months in federal prison for his involvement in a fentanyl smuggling ring.

Avila Alvarado, who previously pleaded guilty before Chief U.S. District Judge Renée Marie Bumb, faced charges of conspiracy to distribute and possess with the intent to distribute fentanyl. The sentence was handed down in Camden federal court today.

Law enforcement officials had their eyes peeled for Avila Alvarado as they watched him exit a residence in New York City, lugging a duffle bag into a vehicle. A lawful vehicle stop led to the recovery of approximately three kilograms of fentanyl – a dangerous drug that has been responsible for countless overdoses across the nation.

But it wasn’t over yet. Inside Avila Alvarado’s residence in New York City, law enforcement found an additional four kilograms of fentanyl, bringing the total recovered to nearly 7.4 kilograms. It was a significant bust that put an end to this drug courier’s plans for distribution.

In addition to his prison term, Avila Alvarado was sentenced to three years of supervised release by Judge Bumb. The investigation leading to this sentencing was conducted by special agents of the Drug Enforcement Administration’s New York Division under the direction of Special Agent in Charge SAC Frank A. Tarentino III.

This operation is part of an Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces (OCDETF) initiative, a multi-agency approach that targets and dismantles high-level criminal organizations threatening the United States. The government is represented by Assistant U.S. Attorney Vincent D. Romano of the OCDETF/Narcotics Unit in Newark.

The New York OCDETF Strike Force, comprised of agents and officers from various federal and local law enforcement agencies, continues to work tirelessly to rid our streets of drugs and protect our communities.
