A 54-year-old New York City man is headed to prison for his role in a brazen bank fraud scheme that left a trail of victims in its wake.
George Sciarrone, 54, of New York City, was sentenced to 61 months in prison by U.S. District Judge Henry E. Autrey on Wednesday for his part in the scheme, which caused $30,000 in losses.
Sciarrone’s prison sentence will run concurrently with a sentence he is already serving on an unrelated matter, making it clear that the justice system will not tolerate this kind of behavior.
According to court documents, Sciarrone pleaded guilty in February to one count of conspiracy to commit mail fraud, six counts of bank fraud, and one count of aggravated identity theft. He admitted to using counterfeit checks to deposit funds into accounts belonging to Missouri residents, which were then withdrawn by him and other accomplices.
Sciarrone’s accomplice, Valerie Kelly, 46, of New York City, was sentenced to 15 months in prison in March for her role in the scheme, which caused over $80,000 in losses to more than 10 victims. Kelly admitted to using the identities of six people to deposit fraudulent checks into five banks.
The U.S. Postal Inspection Service, the Bridgeton Police Department, the Creve Coeur Police Department, the Florissant Police Department, the Richmond Heights Police Department, the St. Charles City Police Department, and the Wentzville Police Department all contributed to the investigation, which was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Tracy Berry.
The scheme, which was carried out between September 28, 2022, and October 7, 2022, saw Sciarrone depositing counterfeit checks ranging from $3,800 to $4,000 into five banks using the names of six different people. Sciarrone was ordered to repay $30,000 to the victims of the scheme.
The sentencing of Sciarrone is a reminder that the justice system will hold individuals accountable for their crimes, no matter how complex or brazen they may seem.
