Bronx Murderer Gets 30 Years

Darren Morris, a member of a notorious Bronx robbery crew, was sentenced to 30 years in prison for his role in a murder and an attempted police shooting.

On July 5, 2009, Morris and his accomplices shot and killed 19-year-old Jordan Jones in the area of Monticello Avenue and Nereid Avenue in the Bronx. The same crew also attempted to shoot a New York City Police Department officer in November 2009.

Morris was originally charged in September 2011 with robbery and firearms offenses related to the attempted home invasion robbery and subsequent police shooting. He was later added to a Superseding Indictment in January 2013, charging him with a wide-ranging robbery conspiracy and numerous robbery, attempted robbery, carjacking, and firearm charges.

His accomplices, Michael Campbell and Patrick Lewis, were also charged in connection with the murder of 20-year-old Patrick Woodburn in December 2010. Campbell and Lewis pleaded guilty to their roles in the murders and received lengthy sentences. Campbell was sentenced to 30 years in prison, while Lewis was sentenced to 25 years.

Morris pleaded guilty to two firearm counts on September 23, 2014, and admitted to discharging his firearm during his flight from the attempted home invasion robbery and to shooting and killing Jones. He was sentenced to 30 years in prison on December 16, 2015.

U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara praised the investigative work of the NYPD and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives in bringing Morris to justice. The case was prosecuted by the Office’s Violent and Organized Crimes Unit, with Assistant United States Attorneys Christopher J. DiMase and Jessica Masella leading the prosecution.

A chart containing the names, charges of conviction, sentencing dates, and sentences imposed on each defendant is attached. The case serves as a reminder of the dangers of gang violence and the importance of bringing perpetrators to justice.
