Alejandro F. Santos, Transporting Child Sexual Abuse Material, New York 2025

New York City’s grim educational landscape was struck by a new horror today as Alejandro F. Santos, a 47-year-old teacher’s aide at a Bronx public school for children with disabilities, stood charged in federal court with transporting and possessing child pornography.

The arraignment of Santos, who had been employed by the New York City Department of Education for 23 years, took place this morning at the Brooklyn federal courthouse before United States Magistrate Judge Vera M. Scanlon. The charges stem from an arrest on a complaint in July 2025, during which Santos was found to be in possession of thousands of photographs and videos depicting the sexual exploitation of children, including infants and toddlers.

According to court filings, Santos arrived at John F. Kennedy International Airport from the Dominican Republic on July 15, 2025. He was stopped by CBP officers due to an alert that he might be in possession of child sex abuse material. The ensuing investigation revealed graphic material stored on his iPhone, prompting the federal charges filed against him.

United States Attorney Joseph Nocella Jr., Special Agent in Charge Ricky J. Patel of Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) New York, and CBP Director Francis J. Russo emphasized the gravity of Santos’ crimes. “The defendant, who held a position of trust as a teacher’s aide in a New York City elementary school, is charged with possessing photos and videos depicting horrific sexual abuse of children,” Nocella stated. Patel urged anyone with information to contact authorities immediately.

CBP Director Russo highlighted the agency’s role in identifying potential criminal activity: “Our officers are dedicated to protecting the public, safeguarding our children from exploitation, and collaborating with partner agencies to ensure thorough investigations are conducted.”

The charges against Santos are serious. If convicted of transporting child sexual abuse material, he faces a mandatory minimum sentence of five years’ imprisonment and a maximum of 20 years.
