Pine Ridge Man Accused of Sex Abuse
A 13-year-old girl was the victim of a horrific crime on November 6, 2012, when Archie Backward, Jr., 21, allegedly had sexual contact with her in Pine Ridge, South Dakota.
The U.S. Attorney’s office announced that Backward has been indicted by a federal grand jury for two counts of abusive sexual contact with a minor and one count of abusive sexual contact without permission.
Backward, a resident of Pine Ridge, appeared before United States Magistrate Judge Veronica L. Duffy on February 1, 2013, and pled not guilty to the indictment. The maximum penalty upon conviction for each count is 2 years’ imprisonment and a $250,000 fine.
Backward is presumed innocent until proven guilty, and the charges are merely accusations. The investigation is being conducted by the Bureau of Indian Affairs, Office of Justice Services, and the Oglala Sioux Tribe Department of Public Safety.
Backward was remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshal, and a trial date has been set for April 9, 2013. The case is a sobering reminder of the importance of protecting our children from predators like Backward.
The people of Pine Ridge deserve to know that their community is safe, and it’s up to law enforcement to ensure that those who harm our children are brought to justice.
The case against Backward is ongoing, and we will continue to follow it closely and provide updates as more information becomes available.
