A Minnesota man has been handed a decade behind bars for his role in a methamphetamine trafficking operation.
According to a statement from the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Verran Burdunice, 60, of Brooklyn Park, Minnesota, was sentenced to 10 years in federal prison, followed by five years of supervised release for his conviction on Possession of a Controlled Substance with Intent to Distribute.
The sentencing took place on May 6, 2024, in front of U.S. District Judge Karen E. Schreier at the federal courthouse in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Burdunice was also ordered to pay a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.
Burdunice was initially indicted in June 2023 by a federal grand jury for his role in the trafficking operation. He pleaded guilty on February 21, 2024. The investigation revealed that Burdunice was involved in a controlled purchase of crack cocaine with a person who was working with law enforcement on February 1, 2023.
Following the controlled purchase, law enforcement conducted a traffic stop on Burdunice’s vehicle in Brookings, South Dakota. A search of the car revealed approximately 212 grams of methamphetamine, which was later found to be 100% pure.
The case was investigated by the Drug Enforcement Administration and the Brookings Police Department, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Mark Hodges prosecuting the case. Burdunice was immediately remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service.
The sentencing of Burdunice is a significant blow to the trafficking operation and sends a clear message that those involved in the distribution of methamphetamine will face severe consequences. The investigation and prosecution of this case are a testament to the dedication and hard work of law enforcement agencies in the region.
